Tatami borders have been woven from cotton and hemp thread for centuries
We used leather instead, for a design at home in a contemporary space

The four edges are bound in the same Himeji steer leather we use for our shoes
Leather tanned with plant-based tannins, gaining depth and lustre with use
A certified eco-leather, produced with reduced harmful emissions (cowhide)
The leather wrapping the four sides is 7.5cm wide. About 3.2 metres for the 70cm square,
about 4 metres for the 88cm square

Igusa makes the touch and the scent. The three layers beneath make the way it feels to sit

■ What igusa does
Six mats' worth can hold up to about 1.8 litres of water, and release it as they dry
It absorbs about 2.5 times as much moisture as cotton — crisp through the rainy season, never too dry in winter
It reduces nitrogen dioxide by 98% and harmful substances such as formaldehyde by 78%
The scent is mainly phytoncide — the same compound as a walk in the forest
It regulates humidity. It cleans the air. It settles you with its scent
Igusa has also been reported to have antibacterial properties

With Natural, time decides the colour
Undyed igusa from Yatsushiro. Igusa normally goes through a clay-dyeing process,
but this was woven just as it was cut
From a green with blue in it to amber, in six months to a year
With Navy, a person decides the colour
Clay-dyed igusa from Yatsushiro, dyed deep blue by a specialist igusa dyer
The dye adjusted to how much moisture each fibre holds
A colour that shifts, and a colour set as deep and final as indigo

Sit down and it is exactly one person's worth. In front of a sofa, beside a bed, by a window
The 88cm square is the centre of a room
Wide enough for two to sit side by side. The same dimensions as a half-mat in the Edoma standard

Kumamoto Prefecture grows about 90% of Japan's igusa, and Yatsushiro is its centre
